When Should You Have Your Gutters Repaired?
When do gutters need to be repaired?
Gutters are vital in keeping the exterior of your home safe from water damage, and as such, are another facet of the home that requires maintenance to prevent needing frequent repairs or replacing them entirely before you should have to. The average lifespan for gutters ranges between 20 and 50 years, and with adequate maintenance and repairs, can last upward of 100 years. But when should you have your gutters repaired? Here are some key indicators that it's time to call a gutter repair company!
- Localized Damage: Over time, some sections become rusted or split apart due to constant exposure to the elements. These sections can be taken out and replaced, rather than having to replace the entire gutter system from your home. When the new pieces are installed, the gaps will be fixed and sealed properly.
- Tears & Cracks: Most breaks and cracks in gutters can be washed properly and coated with a sealant to prevent water from leaking out without having to replace the pieces. If the crack is a bit bigger than expected, then you can opt to have a metal flashing installed with a sealant applied after to achieve the same result.
- Leaking Joints: Joints may become loose as glue or sealant breaks down or from gutters shifting, and thus begin to leak. Leaking joints can be repaired with a waterproof sealant being applied once the joint is resecured.
- Rust:
Standing water contributes to gutters rusting over time, and with enough damage due to rusting, those sections should be replaced.
- Finding Nails & Screws: If you happen to find random nails and screws around your home, there is a chance that your gutters are loosening up and may need to be reattached and secured to your house.
